When you picture Dolly Parton, rhinestones, towering blonde hair and an unmistakable country voice probably spring to mind. But behind the sparkle was an equally dazzling love for animals, especially dogs.
From Cracker Jack, the stray who became one of her closest childhood companions, to Popeye, the Boston Terrier she shared with her husband, Carl Dean, dogs were a constant throughout Dolly’s life. They offered friendship, comfort and, in one extraordinary moment, a reason to keep going.
Her love extended far beyond her own pets. Dolly became “god-dog mother” to her longtime manager’s French Bulldog, Billy the Kid, and later launched Doggy Parton: a suitably glamorous collection of pet clothing, toys and accessories that also helped support an animal rescue in Tennessee.
Following Dolly Parton’s passing, we’re celebrating the dogs who helped shape her story, and the ways she turned her love for animals into something that could help others.
Long before she became one of the world’s most recognisable entertainers, Dolly grew up in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
Animals were an everyday part of life for Dolly and her family. Among them was a stray dog she named Cracker Jack, who became one of her most treasured childhood companions.
Although their time together was relatively short, Cracker Jack left an impression that lasted for decades. Dolly eventually immortalised him in “Cracker Jack”, a song featured on her 1974 album Jolene.
The song remembers a dog who may not have had money or status but was priceless to the little girl who loved him. It’s a characteristically Dolly way of telling a story: taking something deeply personal and transforming it into a feeling millions of people can recognise.
For anyone who grew up with a beloved pet, that connection is easy to understand. Childhood dogs often become part of our earliest memories, playmates, confidants and a comforting presence when the world feels uncertain. Cracker Jack was all of those things and more to Dolly.
Dogs remained an important part of Dolly’s life as her extraordinary career unfolded.
During her decades-long marriage to Carl Dean, the couple shared several dogs, including a Boston Terrier named Popeye. While Carl largely avoided public life, the animals they loved together belonged to the private world the couple built away from the stage.
In a candid interview, Dolly later spoke about a period when she was struggling with her mental health and contemplating taking her own life. In her tale, she recalls hearing Popeye coming up the stairs. The sound of his paws interrupted her thoughts and brought her back to the present. She believed he appeared at exactly the moment she needed him.
It’s an incredibly powerful story, and a reminder of the role pets can play in our emotional lives. A dog might not understand the reason we’re struggling, but their presence can still provide comfort, routine and connection.
Sometimes that looks like a wagging tail after a difficult day. Sometimes it’s a warm body curled up beside us. For Dolly, it was the sound of Popeye’s paws coming towards her.
When he eventually died, Dolly was devastated. His loss reflected something every grieving pet parent knows: animals may be part of our lives for a limited time, but the space they occupy within them can be enormous.

Dolly’s love for her animals didn’t end when they died.
She created a pet cemetery on her Tennessee property, where some of her beloved animals were laid to rest. It was a touching acknowledgement that they had never been “just pets” but were in fact members of her family and part of her personal history.
The loss of a pet can affect every corner of a home. Their bed sits empty. The house feels quieter. Familiar routines suddenly disappear, and for a while, you may still expect to hear paws moving through another room.
But the relationship doesn’t disappear entirely. It continues through photographs, stories and the small memories that surface when we least expect them.
Dolly understood the enduring nature of that bond. Through her songs and stories, the dogs she had lost continued to have a place in her life and, eventually, in the hearts of her fans.
Later in Dolly’s life came Billy the Kid, a French Bulldog belonging to her longtime manager, Danny Nozell.
Billy wasn’t technically Dolly’s dog, but the pair became so close that she proudly called herself his “god-dog mother”.
He became a regular part of Dolly’s world and inspired a series of children’s books, beginning with "Billy the Kid Makes It Big". In the story, Billy follows his musical dreams to Nashville, discovering the importance of confidence, kindness and staying true to himself along the way.
Billy also became the canine face of one of Dolly’s most delightfully unexpected ventures. Because when you’re Dolly Parton, loving dogs isn’t quite enough; you have to give them rhinestones too…obviously.
In 2022, Dolly launched Doggy Parton, a range of dog clothing, accessories and toys inspired by her signature style. This wasn’t your average dog wardrobe.
The collection included rhinestone collars, gingham dresses, denim, cowgirl outfits, bandanas and squeaky toys. There were cowboy hats and even a blonde wig for dogs ready to embrace their inner country-music icon.
Naturally, Billy the Kid became the brand’s canine ambassador, and the products even reached the UK, where they were available for purchase from Pets at Home.
Yet beneath all the sparkle was a meaningful purpose. Part of the proceeds from US sales supported Willa B. Farms, a Tennessee animal rescue that provides a safe home and care for animals in need.
Dolly said the collection was inspired by her lifelong love of pets; a love she traced back to “Puppy Love”, the first single she recorded as a child. The Doggy Parton range was giving back in true Dolly style: joyful, generous, pink and covered in rhinestones.

Doggy Parton captured the playful side of Dolly’s relationship with dogs, but her affection for animals ran much deeper than novelty outfits.
Cracker Jack gave her friendship during her childhood. Popeye found her during one of the most difficult moments of her life. The dogs she shared with Carl became part of their long marriage and life together. Billy the Kid inspired stories, products and plenty of glamorous photos.
Each dog occupied a different chapter, but together they tell a consistent story.
Dolly understood the companionship, comfort and unconditional affection animals can offer. She also understood that loving dogs meant doing something for those without families of their own.
Through Doggy Parton’s support for animal rescue, that affection travelled beyond the animals she knew personally and reached those still waiting for a safe place to call home.
Dolly Parton leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as a singer, songwriter, actor, entrepreneur and philanthropist whose influence stretches far beyond country music.
For dog lovers, there’s another part of her story worth remembering. She was the little girl who loved a stray named Cracker Jack so much that she wrote a song about him decades later. She was the woman who treasured the dogs she shared with Carl and continued to honour them after they had gone. She was Popeye’s pet parent, Billy the Kid’s god-dog mother and the creative force who decided dogs deserved their own rhinestone-covered country wardrobes.
Dolly once reflected on the lasting memories dogs leave, despite their lives being shorter than ours, and perhaps that's the perfect way to understand her relationship with them. Her dogs left their mark on her, and in return, she celebrated the joy animals bring into our lives and helped give more of them the chance to experience love.
So, as the world remembers Dolly, we’ll remember the songs, the laughter, the enormous hair and the even bigger heart. And, of course, the dogs. Because throughout Dolly Parton’s remarkable life, one thing was certain: there was always room for another four-legged friend.
